Constructed Views: The Visitor
At the Pavillon Le Corbusier in Zurich, Swiss Argentinian product designer Alfredo Häberli explores his profound relationship with the Modernist architect’s last building.
Set against Lake Zurich, the Pavillion Le Corbusier stands as the final building completed by the influential and controversial Swiss architect – his only constructed entirely from steel and glass. Merging form and function in its clear shapes and colors, the space embodies the design philosophy that made Le Corbusier one of modern architecture’s most important figures – with a characteristic floating roof, colorful panels, and an imposing concrete staircase carved through its center.
A regular visitor to the Pavillon Le Corbusier, Swiss Argentinian product designer Alfredo Häberli holds a unique connection with the space, finding sanctuary in its irregular levels. Returning with filmmaker Joan Minder, the pair create a visual dialogue between the Pavillon, the environment and its visitor, capturing the intersection of architecture, art and human experience for short film The Visitor.
“The goal was not just to document the building, but to evoke the atmosphere and feeling of the Pavillon, intertwining them with Alfredo Häberli’s creative process. Intentionally photographic, the approach was strongly influenced by Le Corbusier’s clear architecture, form and especially light being the essence of the space.”
Observing the building through the rhythm of Häberli’s movements within it, Minder absorbs the energy and atmosphere of the Pavillon, while inviting audiences into Häberli’s thoughts – meditating on their shared fascination with the Le Corbusier’s work and the sense of stillness found in his spaces.
